Google Bomber
work in progress on my 15 minutes of web fame
Filler Friday: Google Bombing - Adam Mathes - Friday, April 6, 2001 - This is the original article I wrote for Uber where I coin the term "google bombing" and encourage everyone to link to my friend and fellow Uber writer Andy Pressman's web site as talentless hack in the hope it becomes the top search result for it.
After a few months, it worked.
Nearly a year later, on March 3, 2002, John Hiler wrote Google Time Bomb for his site, Microcontent News, although his focus was more on the power of weblogs in Google's results combined with the idea of Google bombing.
On March 13, the BBC picked up the story with Google hit by link bombers, although the story is less than entirely accurate on some points.
From there, a range of publications picked up on the story.
Slate republished Hiler's piece with a catchy graphic on March 25, 2002.
CNet's Molly Wood wrote Declare peace on Google, goodwill toward searchers, in which I'm referred to as a "clever blogger." This bothered me to no end because sometimes I can be very petty.
March 14, 2002 - ZDNet ran a Reuters story Google on guard for practical jokers -
"The popular Internet search engine Google said Wednesday that it was keeping an eye on some practical jokers who had found ways to manipulate results of queries on its site. But it said it did not believe they were capable of doing serious damage."
CNet interviewd me for the article Google protects its search results published on April 16, 2002.
One of my original goals was to legitimize the jargon "Google bomb" and I think this Word Spy entry on Google bombing is the best I'll be able to do.

Opinion Wire and the Butler Group on Google bombing.
Search Engine Watch: Google Bombs Aren't So Scary
March 14, 2002 - NewsFactor Network - Google Search Engine Unfazed by 'Googlewhackers' -
"Mountain View, California-based Google downplayed the effect of such Internet activities as Googlewhacking or Google bombs on the search engine's results or credibility.
'We don't see this as a problem,' Google director of machine learning Peter Norvig told NewsFactor. 'It's true we look at the links, but we look at a lot of different things -- more than 100 different factors.'"
I was personally very entertained by this article since Peter Norvig wrote the AI textbook used in a class I had taken a few weeks ago.
Soon after all these articles were published, Andy's site dropped off the top search results for "talentless hack." Google most likely tweaked their algorithms as a result of all the press, but it may also be that all these highly page-ranked sites (like the BBC) included the rather obscure phrase "talentless hack" and thus destroyed any chance for a lower ranked site to be a top result for it.
My friend and Metafilter owner Matt Haughey succeeded in using a google bomb to catapult a page of his to be the top result for "Critical IP," a company that misused the WHOIS database to do phone solicitations. A good discusison of the matter is here, and Matt gives me credit for "opening the can of worms."
There have been other google bomb attempts. While I originally conceived of the whole thing as a gag, everyone else seems to take search results a bit more seriously and think of manipulating search results as some sort of civic action. For example, Dean Allen made a request for Verisign links to help publicize his friend's problems with them.
David Gallagher has been very vocal about his desire to become the top Google hit for David Gallagher and constantly and relentlessly encourages people to link to him with the text "David Gallagher" to do so.
